Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI)
The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) is a research program developed by BP shortly after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in May 2010. At that time, BP voluntarily committed up to $500 million to an open research program designed to study the impact of the oil spill and its associated response on the environment and public health in the Gulf of Mexico. The funding will be level-loaded over a period of ten years.
The knowledge accrued as a part of this research initiative is intended not only to resolve issues related to the spill but also to improve the long-term environmental health of the Gulf of Mexico. Specifically, the mission of GoMRI is to improve society’s ability to understand and mitigate the impacts of hydrocarbon pollution and stressors of the marine environment, with an emphasis on conditions found in the Gulf of Mexico. The effort will also increase the scientific and research capacity of the Gulf region.
Since the Gulf of Mexico Alliance represents all five states in the Gulf region, the Alliance has agreed to provide the administrative support for the research initiative. Under a Master Research Agreement with BP executed in March of 2011, the Alliance, with support from the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, Harte Research Institute, and the Northern Gulf Institute, manages the operational and non-scientific aspects associated with this program, which includes proposal planning and preparation, administer research grants, implement research database, budget and financial reporting, website management, and program communications and outreach. This program is under the scientific advisory of a twenty-member Research Board comprising renown scientists and chaired by Dr. Rita Colwell.
